United retained the Premier League title

United retained the Premier League title after a 2-0 win over Wigan secured by a first-half penalty from Cristiano Ronaldo and a second-half clincher from substitute Ryan Giggs.

The Blues could only manage a 1-1 draw against Bolton at Stamford Bridge and Ferguson was quick to remind them who has the psychological advantage ahead of the UEFA Champions League final in Moscow on May 21.

"If we had lost the title today it would have been a great knock but the great thing is we are bouncing into the final," the Red Devils boss told.Ferguson reserved special praise for Giggs after he won the Premier League title for a 10th time and drew level on United appearances with Sir Bobby Charlton.

The Welsh winger marked his record-equalling 758th appearance for the club by grabbing a crucial second goal 10 minutes from time after stepping off the bench. Ferguson said: "It is fantastic for Ryan to get the goal that matters. Maybe it is fate. He deserves it. I have known him for 20 years and he has been a credit to the game.

"For him to to equal the record then to get the goal that wins the title is just fantastic." Giggs insists winning trophies is what motivates him and United have a Champions League final against Chelsea on May 21 to look forward to.

Man Utd book Champions League final place

Manchester United have progressed to the Champions League final in Moscow after a dramatic evening at Old Trafford that ended in a 1-0 victory to the home side who will now play the winners of tomorrow's second semi-final between Chelsea and Liverpool.

A stunning Paul Scholes strike in the 14 minute gave Manchester United an early lead that they would not relinquish to book Sir Alex Ferguson's second appearance in European club football's showcase event.

Sweet strike: Paul Scholes supplied the winner Barcelona had enjoyed the bulk of the possession throughout the game, particularly in the second half as the Spanish side chased the game but could not find the breakthrough despite several chances, including at least a couple for Thierry Henry. The former Arsenal forward started the game on the bench but came at the hour mark and made his presence felt, but Edwin Van der Sar in the United goal was up to the task in every instance.

The game had started with Barcelona dominating the early exchanges but that changed with the Scholes goal. Manchester United stepped up the pace and the Spanish side looked rattled.

Valdes nervously palmed away an inswinging cross from Tevez and Puyol was clattered as he tried to clear. The visitors regained their composure as the first half wore on with chances falling to Xavi, Gabriel Milito and Deco with the ever-present Messi seemingly back to his mesmerising best.

But it was Scholes' strike that continued to tell as the home side went into the break with the advantage.
